EXCEPTIONAL HIGH MOUNTAIN HUNTING
There is really no doubt that New Zealand offers the worlds best Tahr hunting experiences and Monarch is a leader in this area.
Tahr were introduced into New Zealand in 1904 into the mountains of the Mt Cook region of the South Island for hunting. In the ensuing years the Tahr have spread to the surrounding areas. While only being found in this area of New Zealand, they are the only free-range herd of Tahr in the world.
They thrive in the mountainous terrain, calling the sometimes inaccessible mountains home. Monarch is located inside the Tahr “home” range and have Tahr on our property, as well as access to 50,000 acres close by.
Monarch is committed to ensuring the longevity of the species, and we only harvest the oldest, most mature bulls available.
BULL TAHR HUNTING
One of the most prized animals in the world. New Zealand is the only place you can hunt them, free range, in the beauty of the mountains. May, June and July when the Bulls coats are fully grown out, combined with their unique horns make them an amazing trophy!!
FITNESS LEVELS
We will typically spot and stalk genuine wild populations meaning that some level of fitness is required. The mountain terrain is better suited for rifle hunting. However, we can accommodate all levels of fitness and bow hunters. We hunt according to our hunter and have been 100% successful on our Tahr hunts.
Helicopter access is available upon request.
HUNTING SEASONS
The Tahr are in their stunning and desirable full winter capes from Mid April through to August, however they can be hunted all year round, with golden/blonde summer coats over the summer period.
YOUR HUNTERS SANCTUARY
Hunts are conducted on Monarchs own Firey Peak station or close by on another 50,000 acre property. These will be day hunts, staying at Monarchs lodge. We have the option of ‘Spike” camps if the hunter requests, or using a back country cabin, once again at the hunters request.
