TAHR & CHAMOIS

EXCEPTIONAL HIGH MOUNTAIN HUNTING

EXCEPTIONAL HIGH MOUNTAIN HUNTING

There is really no doubt that New Zealand offers the worlds best ‘Estate’ red stag hunting. However many of our clients seek the genuine free range hunting experience – particularly for Tahr and Chamois.

Fortunately our free range hunting experiences for Tahr, Chamois and Red Stags is something we are exceptionally proud of and some of the most exciting and challenging hunting you will ever experience. For the truly active hunter it is a must do.

Free range hunts can be many days on foot or combined with our Estate hunting packages for the ultimate trophy experiences. When short on time with combined hunts we will need to use a helicopter to get high up in to the mountains in search of these evasive animals.

TAHR AND CHAMOIS HUNTING

Our free range hunts take place on a number of very large private wilderness properties. This is spectacular and awe-inspiring mountain county – some of the wildest, most beautiful country on earth. We absolutely guarantee the wilderness experience of these hunts – staying in well appointed mountain hunting huts, lots of walking and glassing, incredible mountain scenery, no high fences, and an experience that is just as important as the quality trophy.

FITNESS LEVELS

We will typically spot and stalk genuine wild populations meaning that some level of fitness is required. The mountain terrain is better suited for rifle hunting. However we can accommodate most levels of fitness and bow hunters. We will average above 95% success rate on all our free range hunts for Chamois and Tahr. A successful foot Chamois/tahr hunt will require a high level of fitness with very early morning starts as well as often late evening forays.

Helicopter access is available upon request.

HUNTING SEASONS

  • Chamois is best hunted between late April and September – their winter coats a dark black with beautiful white facial stripes. They can however be hunted all year round with their winter coat changing colour to beautiful golden summer colours which is a very attractive trophy.
  • The Tahr are in their stunning and desirable full winter capes from March through to August, and just like the chamois can be hunted all year round, with golden/blonde summer coats.

YOUR HUNTERS SANCTUARY

We combine Lodge accommodation with our amazing private hunting cabins high up in the mountains. These are all equiped with hot and cold running water, showers, double glazing, gas cooking, refrigerator, comfortable made down double and single bunks, private guests room and warm wood burning stoves. We may also use our spike or fly tent camps which are helicopter accessed.

Probably the best outfitted hunt I have ever been on. Beautiful lodge and property. The guides were top notch and extremely professional. The food was excellent and everybody in the organization was a pleasure to deal with. They all went above and beyond to make sure we had a great time.

“What an experience! Luke’s knowledge of the station we hunted and his consummate skills as a guide made for fantastic hunting.  We saw lots of game and two spectacular stags, one of which became mine. Thanks Luke and the Monarch staff for making my hunt of a lifetime happen. We will do this again!”

Whether it was trophy hunting or meat harvesting, going hunting with Luke was a great time and really successful too. And the locations that Monarch takes you too were some of the best landscapes in New Zealand!!!! Our hunting adventure was a real experience in such a beautiful part of the world.
