Arrive Christchurch

If you arrive in Auckland or Queenstown you will transit to the domestic airport for your scheduled flight to Christchurch - the gateway to the South Island and the stunning Southern Alps. From Christchurch you will then be transferred via private luxury transport to the beautifully restored historic residence - Otahuna Lodge.  Located in Tai Tapu, approximately 30 minutes drive away, the Lodge is a stunning combination of 'the romance of the past with the cosmopolitan pleasures of the present' and remains New Zealand's largest private historic residence.

This is the perfect setting to recharge your batteries after your travels, while taking the opportunity to sample the exceptional 'Estate to Plate' cuisine that is pride of place at Otahuna. We recommend a guided tour of the incredible gardens with Miles to both understand in depth the illustrious history of the property and stretch your legs after the long flight.

Lake Pukaki Mount Cook National Park

After one final opportunity to hunt any trophies you have not managed to bag yet (maybe a buck fallow is on the cards?) you head South through the Mackenzie Basin to the incredible Ashley Mackenzie Lodge nestled located in a private setting overlooking Lake Pukaki and Aoraki Mount Cook. You'll stop at the famous Mt Cook Salmon Farms on our way and spend time exploring the picturesque Tekapo township on the shores of Lake Tekapo.

Unwind in the Fantail Spa and prepare for an evening of sumptuous wine tasting and dinner followed by an incredible star gazing experience over Lake Tekapo as part of the UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve. The next day we picnic on West Coast after our flight over Mount Cook National Park with the added highlight of a Tasman Glacier landing.

The majestic Aoraki Mount Cook National Park is a rugged expanse of untouched mountain ranges, blue lakes and wide open skies that make up the awe inspiring alpine UNESCO World Heritage Site that straddles the Southern Alps in the Mackenzie Region. Formally established in 1953, the park contains more than 140 peaks standing over 2,000 metres (6,600 ft), 19 peaks over 3,000 meters, 72 named glaciers including New Zealand’s largest glacier – the Tasman Glacier, and our tallest mountain - the park's name sake, Mt Cook.  Collectively these natural features cover over 40 percent of its 700 square kilometres (170,000 acres).

The West Coast of NZ, a short flight across the Southern Alps, is another piece of untamed natural wilderness, retaining the feeling of a pioneer frontier. From dense virgin rainforests to wild coastlines with glaciers and geological treasures in between, the scenery is simply epic. From the western slopes of the Southern Alps to the coast, this diverse land spans 600km of coastline and no more than 50 kilometres in width at its widest point and populated by only 31,000 people, making it a gem of a natural untouched environment.

Today we explore this truly unique environment from the skies in the comfort of your private helicopter landing on glaciers and a remote West Coast beach for lunch.

Queenstown Adventuring

While we'll be heading to Queenstown today to discover the jewel in the South Islands crown, we'll entertain you with a transfer flight and a 'three town wine tasting' by helicopter on the way!

We'll take the opportunity to sample wines and craft beer from Central Otago, the world's southern-most commercial wine growing region best known for its internationally acclaimed and world recognised Pinot Noirs, accounting for over 70% of wine production in the region

The Cromwell Basin contains the largest concentration of vines in an area bounded by the Kawarau River, Lake Dunstan and the Pisa mountain range while Gibbston Valley, also known as the 'Valley of the Vines', is one of the most scenic wine growing areas you'll ever encounter. Vineyards are sandwiched, sometimes precariously, between rugged schist mountains and the rocky Kawarau River gorge.

Alongside the Pinot's and Craft Beer, other varieties including chardonnay, pinot gris, riesling and sauvignon blanc are also grown.  We highly recommend trying the locally grown and produced shared platters, crafted to match the delightful Otago Wines.

The late afternoon and evening is all yours to wander around Queenstown to try any of the multitude of bars, restaurants or dance late into night if so desired.  And of course there are so many adventure activities to try as well.  Why not combine the Skyline Gondola with a fun Luge and Bungy Jump? Pop out to the historical gold mining town Arrowtown on the double decker red London bus?  Your Monarch CEO is here to help and facilitate your afternoon and evening, and should you decide to add on a few more nights, they will book this for you.

Otherwise, we leave you here in Queenstown to enjoy the rest of your stay in our beautiful part of the world
