Delight in four days fly-fishing high in and around Mt Aspiring National park from your base either in the luxurious Mahu Whenua lodge or in Minaret Station - one of the world's most unique alpine lodges accessible only by helicopter - Minaret Station. Then spend as many days exploring the mighty Southern Alps around the famous lake resorts of Wanaka and Queenstown with lots of options for more fishing excursions.

Wanaka and Queenstown are arguably the most well-known adventure towns in New Zealand. Both are wedged between towering mountains and large glistening blue lakes. Queenstown is perhaps the most famous with it's high-end international shops and vast array of bars and restaurants. While Wanaka might be the sleepy cousin it is no less stunningly beautiful and the perfect place to relax and unwind.  These two locations will provide the city top-ups on your adventure.

Your fishing adventure takes place around the Mt Aspiring National Park. From your base and using helicopters to access a huge number of different rivers and alpine lakes your Monarch guide will construct an incredible wilderness fishing experience to match your ability - including those relatively new to the sport of casting. Both lodge choices boast extensive fishing on their private land as well as in the broader region in association with your guide. The incredible landscape makes this area one of the best places in the world to spend a day of wilderness fishing.

Fly-fishing Wanaka

Fly-fishing in NZ is about epic sceneries, delightful catches and memorable experiences. The season around Wanaka opens in October with a few smaller streams, followed in November by the world famous back country streams.  These waters are abundant with large wild brown and rainbow trout, best caught with dry flies/nymphs & streamers.

Your guide will actively seek the best rivers for your excursion, taking in your experience and level, the weather conditions & the time of year.  Expect to scout and sight fish, stalk your prey when necessary and spot the best location from which to cast, then decide on which technique and hook you’ll need to land the trout.  Fly by helicopter or drive and hike – the options are there and the decisions are yours!

Heading into Mt Aspiring National Park is all about the wilderness fishing experience – Mt Aspiring National Park covers 3,562 square kilometres (1,375 sq mi) and is situated at the southern end of the Southern Alps.  Strong conservation policies mean that the rivers and lakes which flow through and from Mt Aspiring are clean and pristine, offering the perfect environment for freshwater fly fishing, salmon or trout fishing.
